Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps come about from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard amid a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French relocated south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is acquired from the term for the non-winning toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and across the nation. A great many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the current craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he created the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
