Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps evolved from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s horsemen played Hazard amid a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French moved south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was derived from the term for the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the nation. A great many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. Later, he invented the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
