Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Current craps come about from the old English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s knights played Hazard during a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French moved south and found sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is derived from the term for the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and across the nation. A good many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he created the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
