Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps evolved from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, although Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard through a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French headed down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was gotten from the name of the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the country. A great many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he invented the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
