Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps come about from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard through a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French moved south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is acquired from the term for the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and across the nation. A few acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. Later, he developed the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
