Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Modern craps come about from the old English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s soldiers gambled on Hazard through a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when exiled by the English, the French headed down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and all over the nation. A few acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the current craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he created the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
