Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps evolved from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard amid a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French moved south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is acquired from the term for the non-winning toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and across the nation. Many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he established the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
