Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Modern craps developed from the old English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the birth of the game, but Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s horsemen wagered on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French moved down south and found sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is acquired from the term for the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and all over the nation. A good many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he designed the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
