Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps developed from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard through a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the British, the French moved down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was acquired from the name of the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the nation. A good many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the modern craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Later, he designed the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
