Be cunning, play clever, and master craps the ideal way!
Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Modern craps developed from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French relocated south and located refuge in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and across the country. A good many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. Later, he designed the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
