Be cunning, play smart, and become versed in craps the ideal way!
Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps come about from the old English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the origin of the game, however Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard through a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the English, the French headed south and located sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is gotten from the name of the non-winning toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and all over the country. A good many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he created the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
