Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps evolved from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s horsemen enjoyed Hazard amid a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French headed south and found safety in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was acquired from the name of the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and throughout the nation. A few acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he developed the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
