Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps come about from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French headed down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and across the nation. Most consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the current craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he invented the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
