Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about 100 years old. Current craps formed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s horsemen played Hazard through a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French headed down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is acquired from the name of the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and across the country. Most consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the modern craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he created the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
