Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Current craps formed from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s knights played Hazard through a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French relocated down south and discovered refuge in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the country. A good many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the current craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. Later, he developed the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
