Be clever, play smart, and master craps the ideal way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about 100 years old. Modern craps evolved from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the birth of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard during a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French relocated down south and found safety in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was derived from the term for the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and throughout the country. A great many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the current craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he established the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
