Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps formed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s knights played Hazard through a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French moved down south and located refuge in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is derived from the name of the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the country. A few acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he established the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
