Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Current craps evolved from the old Anglo game called Hazard. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is acquired from the name of the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the nation. Many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he established the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
