Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about 100 years old. Current craps evolved from the ancient English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, however Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard through a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French moved south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was gotten from the name of the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and throughout the country. A good many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he invented the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
