Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about one hundred years old. Current craps come about from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard through a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when displaced by the British, the French moved down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was derived from the name of the non-winning toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and all over the nation. A great many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he invented the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
