Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Modern craps evolved from the old English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French relocated south and located sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was derived from the term for the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and across the nation. Many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. Later, he established the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
