Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps developed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the birth of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s paladins played Hazard during a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
