Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps come about from the ancient English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the birth of the game, although Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard during a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when exiled by the English, the French headed down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and across the country. A good many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he created the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
