Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps developed from the old English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard during a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French moved south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was derived from the term for the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and all over the nation. A few think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. Later, he created the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
