Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps come about from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard amid a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French headed south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is derived from the term for the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the nation. Most think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the modern craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he established the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
