Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps evolved from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s soldiers gambled on Hazard through a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French relocated down south and located refuge in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the country. Many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. Later, he developed the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
